Migrants leave belongings behind in Durban

Staff reporter

Durban – As the March and March campaign intensifies its action against undocumented migrants, dozens of foreign nationals leaving the Old Drive Inn site in Durban were forced to abandon many of their personal belongings after being informed that only one bag per person would be allowed onto buses transporting them to Musina, Limpopo.

The abandoned items included blankets, clothing, suitcases, food, household goods, electronic equipment and other personal possessions scattered across the parking area. Municipal cleaning teams later moved in to clear the site after the buses had departed.

Meanwhile, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba confirmed that the group of Congolese nationals who had been camping outside the Department of Home Affairs offices on Moore Road had demanded free housing from the municipality. The city has maintained that it cannot provide permanent accommodation outside the framework of existing housing policies.

The relocation of the migrants marks another chapter in the ongoing operation targeting undocumented foreign nationals, with authorities continuing efforts to relocate those at the site while municipal workers cleaned up the large volume of belongings left behind.

As we press reset button next, we now focus Jabu Mbalula, MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport.

He is joining Sulky Mokoena, MEC for Human Settlements.
