Mystery of Missing SAPS Member Raises Unanswered Questions in Excelsior

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The disappearance of 50-year-old SAPS member Moabi Alex Thekiso has raised growing concern among his family, with questions being asked about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and the response to his whereabouts.

According to information received by Step Up, Thekiso was last seen around the end of July. SAPS has since appealed to the public for assistance in locating him, stating that he went missing from the Mahlatswetsa area near Excelsior.

Information provided to Step Up suggests that on the day of his disappearance, Thekiso was at work and was reportedly working on a docket. He allegedly went outside to smoke, later spoke to his captain (name withheld) and knocked off.

He reportedly went to a local bottle store before travelling to the township to run errands.

His family says that he later returned home. His younger brother reportedly heard him speaking to his captain on the phone that evening. The following day, however, the family could not locate him.

What has particularly concerned the family is what they describe as a lack of clear information and support from some of his colleagues.

They say they have asked whether CCTV footage from Excelsior’s entrances and exits could be checked, whether local hospitals have been contacted and whether there has been any activity on his bank accounts that could assist in tracing him.

The family further claims that a colleague of Thekiso has been contacting relatives asking about his whereabouts, despite some of those relatives living outside the area. During a family meeting on 9 August, the same colleague allegedly questioned why the family had gathered in numbers and reportedly asked Thekiso’s younger brother to obtain his missing brother’s cellphone so that he could “check some things.”

The family says Thekiso is not someone who would simply disappear without informing those close to him.

They are now asking: What happened to Moabi Thekiso after he left work?

There are also questions about whether all possible avenues of investigation have been exhausted and whether those closest to the investigation have provided the family with sufficient information.

The family has not accused any specific person of being responsible for Thekiso’s disappearance. However, the unanswered questions have left them wondering whether there is information they have not been told.

Could there be more to Thekiso’s disappearance than initially meets the eye?

As the search continues, the family is calling for answers, transparency and every possible avenue to be explored to establish what happened to their loved one.

Anyone with information about Moabi Alex Thekiso’s whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or provide information through the MySAPS App.

In other province the Premier and MEC for Police would have visited the families and showed support.

But why is SAPS calling it’s employee a person? He is not a siding person but Officer.
