VIDEO | Desmond Tutu’s prophecy manifests as ANC leaders beg voters for another chance

Bloemfontein – The African National Congress (ANC) is asking South Africans to give it another chance at the ballot box, as the late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s warnings about the governing party appear to be coming back to haunt it.

Tutu had repeatedly warned the ANC about the consequences of arrogance, corruption and poor governance, but party leaders at the time appeared dismissive of his concerns.

The ANC even famously insisted that it would govern until the return of Jesus Christ.

Years later, the party finds itself fighting to regain the confidence of voters after losing its outright majority nationally and suffering significant electoral setbacks in major municipalities.

During a media briefing on Wednesday, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, appeared to come with a proverbial cap in hand as the party sought to convince voters that it still has what it takes to govern.

Meanwhile, the ANC has blamed challenges facing municipalities on leadership within coalition governments.

“The main cause of all these issues is leadership, because everything stands and falls on leadership. The leadership characterised by coalition dynamics in these big cities and elsewhere, unavoidably, it has basically brought all this work we are going through now, which has become permanent, systemic problems, which were not there before,” said Deputy Chairperson of the ANC’s Local Government Intervention Subcommittee, Dr Dickson Masemola.

Masemola also called on residents of Johannesburg to give the ANC another chance.

“Johannesburg, we want to restore it. It’s a matter of time, and we want to basically restore this city to its glory. But we can only be able to do so if the people of greater Johannesburg give their organisation, the ANC, the absolute authority without any hesitation.

“We have got the necessary capacity, the necessary policies, including all that is required to get the city back to where it is actually supposed to be.”

The ANC’s plea comes as the party attempts to rebuild its support and convince voters that it can once again deliver effective and accountable governance.

For a party that once spoke with absolute certainty about its political dominance, the appeal for another chance marks a striking change in tone.

This is a developing story as the begging continues. In Free State they even fight if their pictures are not posted on social media because they want to be seen walking around.
