Bloemfontein — What started as a normal Friday night for many motorists in Bloemfontein quickly turned into a long night with some ending behind bars after a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation descended on Maphisa Road.

The operation involving the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality Traffic Department, municipal law enforcement and the South African Police Service saw several motorists stopped, searched and screened as authorities tightened the screws on drunk driving and unroadworthy vehicles.
WATCH
STEPUPSANEWS understands several motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol while a number of vehicles were impounded on the spot for critical defects, expired licences and permit-related violations.

Witnesses described heavy police visibility in the area with traffic officials leaving little room for negotiations as vehicle after vehicle was pulled aside during the operation.
WATCH
The Friday night crackdown forms part of the municipality’s ongoing “Safer City” campaign which seeks to increase visibility and enforce zero tolerance on traffic violations within Mangaung.
This is not the first law enforcement operation conducted in recent weeks as authorities continue to intensify visibility across hotspots in Bloemfontein amid growing concerns over reckless driving and lawlessness on the roads.

Authorities have warned motorists to expect more roadblocks and law enforcement operations in the coming weeks as officials intensify efforts to restore order on Mangaung roads.
This story will be updated once more details are shared on Tuesday.
