WATCH | “It is an issue if it’s not addressed” — Dr Matebesi on impact of illegal migration hurting ANC

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein — With less than six months before the local government elections scheduled for 4 November, illegal migration looks set to play a major role in determining the outcome.

What started in KwaZulu-Natal has spread to the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and North West, becoming a growing political thorn for the African National Congress.

The frustrations first emerged in schools, where communities explained that children of undocumented foreign nationals were being prioritised ahead of South African citizens.

Now protests against illegal migration appear to be unifying South Africans across political lines, with parties such as the Patriotic Alliance, ActionSA and Inkatha Freedom Party likely to benefit politically, while the ANC could suffer at the polls.

Many citizens argue that ordinary South Africans carry the burden of illegal migration while politicians and their families live comfortably in gated estates with 24-hour security.

Dr. Phutego Matebesi from the University of the Free State said the illegal migration crisis could hurt the ANC if government fails to address it decisively.

Dr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Minister in the GNU, said undocumented migrants must leave the country.

Sharing a similar view on the issue of scarce skills is Joyce “Pretenders” Mathae, the Free State Premier, whose office is giving work that South Africans can do to a Nigerian national, but that is a story for another day.
