Bloemfontein – Thabang Selemela, Director of Human Resources Development at DESTEA, is facing serious accusations from NEHAWU members, who allege abuse of power and unequal treatment of employees.
Selemela is at the centre of a labour dispute after three female employees were charged following an internal altercation.
One employee has since returned to work, while the remaining two—both NEHAWU members—remain at home after disciplinary proceedings.
According to insiders, all three officials were involved in a physical confrontation and were formally charged.
“All three officials were charged. A PSA member pleaded guilty and received a one-month suspension without pay. The other two pleaded not guilty, were found guilty, and were also given a one-month suspension without pay and a final written warning,” a source said.
However, the insider claims the outcomes diverged sharply thereafter.
“The PSA member appealed, and the appeal automatically suspended the sanction, allowing her to return to work. The two NEHAWU members are sitting at home serving their two months because they cannot appeal.”
A NEHAWU member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said while her colleagues accept wrongdoing, the handling of the matter exposes bias within the department.
“We are all equal before the law, and this is wrong. Our HRD is clueless, biased, and unfair. PSA is treated differently. We are taking this matter further, and we will expose him,” she said.
Attempts to obtain comment from Thabang Selemela were unsuccessful at the time of publication, as he did not respond to calls.
