Kroonstad – The Department of Human Settlements continues to hog the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Today, MEC Teboho “Sulky” Mokoena will be in Kroonstad, but it is the purpose of his visit, and the costs attached to it, are likely to raise eyebrows.
According to a poster circulating ahead of the event, Mokoena will be in Kroonstad for the:
“Finalisation – Handover of 5 300 Serviced Sites Project.”
The cost of the event is just over R800 000, against the backdrop of the department having already spent more than R2 million on events.
This is the same department that appointed intervention officers who, one would expect, should have assisted in finalising outstanding projects. Yet, the department has a bottomless budget, it continues to spend money on events.
The spending comes amid claims that the expenditure was allegedly flagged by Provincial Treasury.
A few years ago, money was reportedly redirected to fund the infamous Egyptian trip. To this day, questions remain about the return on investment from that trip and what tangible benefits it brought to the people of the Free State.
The Kroonstad event is taking place on the same day that the ANC in Lejweleputswa is expected to launch its manifesto.
This raises questions about whether Human Settlements and COGTA could increasingly be used as vehicles for electioneering as the political calendar heats up.
If there is one MEC who masters Lesufism is Sulky, this man is busy with little to show off.
Incomplete Projects
The amount of incomplete housing project is staggering, starting Welkom G-hostel which is nowhere near completion.
Few meters from G-hostel residents are swimming with sharks in Thabang.
No far, just across residents are still waiting for the houses Mokoena and Mathae said will be completed in March but they are still under construction.
In Odendaalsrus where the ANC is launching manifesto ke Dada Morero all over.
More questions than answers as we zoom into what could the architecture of looting.
