UPDATE | Two Thaba Nchu tuck-shops ordered shut permanently following health inspections

Staff Reporter

Thaba Nchu – Two of the five tuck-shops closed during a recent multi-disciplinary compliance operation in the Thaba Nchu CBD have been ordered not to reopen after serious health and safety violations were uncovered by Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s Environmental Health officials.

According to information received by Step Up News, Batho Tuck-shop was found to be operating without a valid Certificate of Acceptability (COA), a legal requirement for businesses handling food.

Officials further found that the premises lacked basic hygiene standards and were also being used as a residential space, raising concerns about food safety and compliance with public health regulations.

Another business, Matukaneng Tuck-shop, was shut down after rat poison was discovered inside maize meal. Authorities indicated that the contamination was linked to a rat infestation within the shop, highlighting serious concerns regarding pest control, sanitation and food storage practices.

Environmental Health officials said the closures stem from inadequate sanitation, poor waste management and the presence of disease-carrying pests, all of which pose a significant risk to public health.

The affected businesses have reportedly been instructed not to resume operations unless they fully comply with the applicable health and safety regulations.

Sello More, City Manager at Mangaung Metro said they are regularising formal and informal trading.
