HEADLINE | Food safety concerns uncovered during Thaba Nchu compliance operation

Staff Reporter

Thaba Nchu – Mangaung Metropolitan Municipal officials under Public Safety Directorate have uncovered a number of food safety and compliance concerns during a multi-disciplinary inspection operation conducted at businesses in Thaba Nchu.

The operation, led by law enforcement and environmental health officials, targeted food outlets and general dealers as part of ongoing efforts to enforce health regulations and protect consumers from unsafe products.

During inspections, officials examined food storage facilities, refrigeration equipment, stock records and the general condition of premises to determine compliance with applicable health and municipal by-laws.

Authorities identified several concerns relating to food handling and storage practices, with some products found in conditions that raised questions about their suitability for human consumption.

Inspectors also scrutinised refrigeration facilities and storage areas, where concerns were raised about hygiene standards and the manner in which certain food items were being kept.

In some instances, officials discovered living quarters within or adjacent to business premises, prompting further enquiries regarding sanitation and compliance with health requirements.

Food products suspected of being unsafe or unfit for sale were removed by officials while detailed inspections and documentation were completed at the affected premises.

The compliance operation forms part of a broader municipal campaign aimed at improving food safety standards, enforcing by-laws and ensuring businesses operate within the requirements of public health legislation.

Authorities have indicated that further action may follow where non-compliance is confirmed, with businesses expected to address identified shortcomings to safeguard the health and wellbeing of consumers.
