The operation, conducted by Mangaung Metro Law Enforcement, the South African Police Service and private security partners, followed a complaint by First National Bank regarding sounds resembling digging underneath Central Park. Authorities feared the activity could threaten infrastructure and businesses operating in the area.

Officials entered the tunnel system on Thursday where several occupants were found living beneath the city centre. Images from the operation show mattresses, cooking equipment, personal belongings and makeshift structures inside the tunnels. Police also seized a knife during the operation.

Municipal officials said the intervention forms part of ongoing efforts to address the illegal occupation of public infrastructure, improve safety in the CBD and prevent damage to municipal assets. Structures erected inside the tunnels were dismantled and removed during the operation.

Last month, Sello More, City Manager said the municipality and Israel Kgamanyane, Head of Department for Public Safety will embark on safe Mangaung.
