INFANT CORPSE DUMPED AT NORTHERN LANDFILL — MANGAUNG METRO

Staff Reporter

Bloemfontein – Mangaung is reeling after the gruesome discovery of an infant’s corpse at the Northern landfill site, a chilling incident that has exposed deeper failures in security, accountability, and environmental management within the metro.

During an oversight visit by STEPUPSANEWS, it was confirmed that the infant’s body was transported to the landfill by a truck linked to the University of the Free State.

The matter has been reported to the Bayswater Police Station, where investigations are underway.

But beyond the horror of the discovery lies an even bigger concern, a system that appears to be collapsing in plain sight.

The landfill was found operating under risky conditions, with recyclers and residents moving freely in and out without protective gear, raising serious safety concerns.

Tshitso Mohatlane, Acting Superintendent at Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, warned residents to stick to operating hours to avoid falling victim to crime a warning that, while necessary, underscores the lack of effective security measures at these sites.

Mohatlane further highlighted the alarming shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), leaving workers exposed to dangerous and unhygienic conditions.

However, what may be most damning are observations made on-site:
A lone loader was seen operating while what appeared to be fuel was being transferred from a Mangaung Metro vehicle into a service provider’s truck.

This raises a critical question:
Why are municipal resources being used to support contractors who are already being paid?

Is this mismanagement, negligence, or something more?
