MEC Arrives Late After Programme Concludes, Sparks NUM Frustration in Welkom

Staff reporter

Welkom – A health outreach programme targeting former mineworkers in Welkom has come under scrutiny following tensions triggered by the late arrival of Free State MEC for Health, Viceroy Mahlatsi.

The initiative, aimed at addressing critical issues such as tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS through screenings, testing, and awareness, did proceed with several activities on the ground, with community members participating throughout the day.

However, by the time the MEC reportedly arrived at approximately 15:50, much of the programme had already progressed with attendees having already been served food and some beginning to leave the venue.

His delayed arrival ultimately resulted in his official address not taking place, disrupting the formal programme and drawing frustration from leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), who had anticipated structured engagement.

While operational aspects of the outreach appear to have been carried out successfully, the absence of the MEC’s speech overshadowed the day’s proceedings and shifted attention away from the intended impact of the event.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns around coordination at high-level public engagements, particularly where multiple stakeholders including organised labour and vulnerable communities, are involved.

As stakeholders reflect on the day’s events, the focus now turns to ensuring that future outreach programmes deliver not only services, but also accountability, punctual leadership, and respect for community expectations.

The outreach continues today with games at Zuka Baloyi Stadium.
