Bloemfontein – The disconnection of electricity in buildings housing Free State Provincial Government by Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s Centlec has also affected Social Development and Provincial Treasury.
On Wednesday, the power utility started disconnecting electricity due to debt.

As reported on Wednesday, FSPG owes R200 million, Free State Development Corporation owes R450 million while Waterfront Mall owes R44 million.
A senior government official who spoke on condition of anonymity said they offered to pay R30 million of the debt.
“We sent a proposal to Centlec to pay R30 million to get power back and work on arrangement.
We await Centlec’s response because this is unprecedented.”
Lele Mamatu, spokesperson for CENTLEC released a media statement outlining what efforts the power utility took before disconnecting.
“Centlec has made multiple efforts to engage with defaulting customers through its approved Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy. This includes issuing of disconnection notices for overdue accounts.
Despite these efforts, a significant number of accounts remain unpaid, which negatively impacts CENTLEC’s ability to continue delivering quality services. While disconnection is not our primary goal, we urge customers to make timely payments to avoid service interruptions.”
Apart from Centlec, the Provincial Government still owe the municipality R1.3 billion.
All these happen in month when Sefora Ntombela, former Premier was replaced by Mxolisi Dukwana after the provincial conference two years ago.
