BLOEMFONTEIN – The Free State Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (PWI) has been ordered to pay R1.2 million to former employee John Mothibi after the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council ruled that his dismissal was unfair.
The ruling, handed down by Bargaining Council panellist Sekonyela Moeketsi on 20 March 2026, found in favour of Mothibi following his dismissal just days after reporting for duty.
According to documents seen by Step Up SA, Mothibi signed a 12-month fixed-term contract in January 2025. He officially commenced his duties on 25 February 2026, but his employment was terminated on 3 March 2026, after working for only five days.
The Bargaining Council ordered the department to pay Mothibi R1.2 million by 30 April 2026.
However, the department failed to comply with the arbitration award within the stipulated timeframe.
As a result, Mothibi instructed his legal representatives to pursue legal action on 10 June 2026 to enforce the ruling and the department’s bank account likely to be attached.
It remains unclear what led to the termination of Mothibi’s contract or whether the department intends challenging the award.
