Welkom – Residents of Welkom, Matjhabeng say they have been forced to endure a persistent foul smell for years due to what they believe is an ongoing sewage spill within their community.
According to residents, the apparent sewage has been flowing through an open drainage channel in an area used daily by pedestrians, raising concerns about possible health and environmental risks.
“It has been like this for years, and it is right where people pass every day inside the community,” a resident told Step Up SA, adding that the matter has already been reported to the relevant authorities.
Photos and videos taken at the scene show dark water flowing alongside the road and spreading into the surrounding grassland but the video below is beyond appealing to say the least.

Residents are now calling on the Matjhabeng Local Municipality to urgently investigate the source of the apparent sewage spill and implement a permanent solution, saying they have lived with the unbearable stench for far too long.
