BREAKING NEWS | Two dockets back with NPA for decision

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The deadline set by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for all fraud and corruption-related dockets to be returned by 15 June is currently only halfway met.

With Monday fast approaching, only two of the four dockets have been returned to the NPA, while the remaining two are still under investigation.

Last month, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in the Free State, Advocate Eugene Ontong, set 15 June as the cut-off date for the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, to submit the dockets for prosecutorial decisions.

STEPUPSANEWS can confirm that the Public Works and Infrastructure “Travelgate” docket, as well as the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development matter involving R1.8 million, have been returned to the NPA by the Hawks. Decisions on both matters are now expected.

The remaining dockets, relating to the New Beginnings Project and the missing cattle matter, are still undergoing further investigation.

Both cases were opened by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) against Mathae and Mokoena.

DPCI spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli said it is normal for dockets to be returned with further instructions from prosecutors.

“Please note that it is normal course of events that a docket will be submitted to the NPA, come back with new instructions, conduct further investigation, and be resubmitted. This cycle does from time to time repeat itself. All the matters are receiving collaborative attention,” he said.
