Not move-in ready: Allanridge families face another winter of waiting

Staff Reporter

ALLANRIDGE — Nearly two months after the Free State Provincial Government promised that 27 flood-affected families from Nyakallong would relocate by March, the housing project remains incomplete, raising fears that residents may spend another winter in unsafe conditions.

A visit to the relocation site this week revealed exposed trenches, unfinished plumbing infrastructure and construction material still scattered across the development.

Although several houses have already been built, parts of the project still appear far from ready for occupation. Some units remain without completed piping and drainage systems.

The relocation project was announced following severe flooding and sewage spillages linked to the Voelpan Dam crisis in Nyakallong, which left several homes inhabitable.

During oversight visits, Premier Joyce “Pretenders” Letsoha-Mathae and Human Settlements MEC Teboho “Sulky” Mokoena assured affected residents that the relocation process would be expedited, with families expected to move in by March.

However, with May already underway and winter temperatures beginning to drop across the Free State, many residents remain in limbo as delays continue to mount.

The unfinished state of the project is likely to intensify scrutiny over government promises made to affected families still waiting for safe and livable homes.
