Voelpan Dam Disaster Exposes Mathae and Mokoena’s Empty Promises Yet Again

Staff Reporter

Allanridge . – The Voelpan Dam in Nyakallong is once again exposing the Free State Provincial Government’s empty promises.

At least 42 houses have been left uninhabitable following the overflow of water from the dam, coupled with ongoing sewage spillage.

The Free State Provincial Government (FSPG) promised to relocate affected families to Extension 1.

According to the FSPG, one of those affected is 82-year-old Matshediso Landela, with relocation to newly built houses (expected to be completed by the end of March 2026 now it’s May) and zero delivery.

On 16 September 2025, Free State Premier Joyce “Pretenders” Mathae, alongside MEC for COGTA and Human Settlements Teboho “Sulky” Mokoena, also aka Bakenspark, visited Allanridge and made sweeping promises to residents.

“Our priority is to better the lives of the people of the Free State. We made a commitment to serve you and we shall not falter,” said Mathae.

However, Mathae has faltered yet again.

STEPUPSANEWS can confirm that residents have not been relocated as promised by the FSPG. This marks the fourth winter that affected families will endure exposure to dangerous conditions, including snakes and the persistent overflow from the dam—similar to the ongoing crisis faced by Welkom residents.

Austin Chaole, an activist from Nyakallong, said the situation has become a cycle of broken promises.

In conclusion Chaole said Voelpan Dam has chemicals from the mine and animals grazing there are not safe.

Politicians lie unprovoked. From Mama Action to Mama Lies, these are the results of being busy doing NOTHING!
