UPDATE | MPAC to revisit recommendations, including R850 million write-off

BETHLEHEM – The Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) of Dihlabeng Local Municipality is meeting today to revisit and potentially amend its recommendations relating to the proposed R850 million write-off of irregular, unauthorised, fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

The development follows MPAC’s earlier recommendation that Council approve the accounting write-off of approximately R850 million in UIF&W expenditure, while also calling for criminal and disciplinary action against officials implicated in the expenditure.

Today’s deliberations could result in changes to those recommendations before they are ultimately placed before Council.

Questions have also been raised about the circumstances surrounding today’s MPAC meeting, including whether any part of the proceedings should be held in camera. The meeting comes ahead of an anticipated Council sitting, which could take place as early as Wednesday or Thursday, although the date is yet to be formally confirmed.

The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to be significant, as any amended recommendations will ultimately have to be considered by Council.

MPAC comprises members from various political formations, including the ANC, DA, EFF, VF Plus and independent representation.
