MAP fraudster released on bail after allegedly pointing firearm at colleague

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – Serious questions are being raised about how a convicted fraudster secured employment within the Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality, particularly in a law enforcement role.

Lejwe Mofokeng, who was convicted of fraud in 2020 and received a three-year suspended sentence for using a fraudulent matric certificate, has resurfaced as a by-law enforcement officer at the municipality despite his criminal record.

Mofokeng is allegedly allocated a blue light car.

Mofokeng was arrested on Saturday, 14 March, following an incident in which he pointed a firearm at a colleague on Wednesday, 11 March 2026. The incident took place during working hours at municipal offices. He was released on bail on Monday case number 318/3/2026.

It remains unclear how Mofokeng was able to obtain a firearm licence given his prior conviction. If the firearm is found to be unlicensed, this results in additional charges.

The municipality has yet to respond to questions regarding the matter.

Questions sent to municipal spokesperson Thabo Kessah include:

  • Can the municipality confirm whether Mofokeng is its employee?
  • What position does he hold?
  • When was he employed?
  • Does he possess a valid matric certificate?
  • Has he been suspended pending the outcome of the criminal case?
  • Was his criminal record disclosed or known at the time of his employment?

His six months contract has just been renewed and this is a spat in the face of MAP residents after Advocate Mzwakhe Mofokeng, Municipal Manager said he as cleaning the municipality.

Mofokeng is the same Municipal Manager who could not read financial statement.

This is a developing story as South African Police Service is now the focus point of this case.
