Bloemfontein – The department responsible for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport is not only failing to maintain roads, but also failing dismally at keeping police vans fully maintained.
According to Internal Question Paper (IQP), at least 15% of Police vehicles in Free State are currently not functional.
That’s the answer Jabu “Ish” Mbalula, MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport provided to Honorable Cloete of the Freedom Front Plus.
Cloete also asked Mbalula about affected police stations.
“Which respective police stations are being affected by police vehicles not being functional?”
In his response Mbalula said many are affected.
“Many stations are affected but the follow-up is done with garage managers to speed up the repairs as well as those outsourced.”
Free State has 111 police stations in total and 15% of the vehicles are dysfunctional. You can not make this up.
When you go to a police station to report a crime during festive and you are told there are no vans, please understand.
You might wait hours, days, weeks or months for police to attend to your matter.
Following yesterday’s article about potholes in the province, the department has thus far spent R60,000,000 on potholes.
In the same IQP Mbalula also confirmed Joyce “Pretenders” Mathae was a panellist on the 11 June 2024 when the department interviewed candidates for DDG position, a position that required Engineering qualification.
We previously reported former MEC was a panellist and Advocate Mojalefa Molotsi would be appointed and indeed he was appointed.

The problem lies with station commander thats is responsible for all vehicles. Mbulula cannot be held responsible for the carelessness of the station commander.
The other problem is there is not enough police vehicles at any given station to attend an emergency.
This is a worrying problem
