Bloemfontein – A year after the Jaggersfontein mine collapse that claimed 3 lives, dozens injured and 160 families displaced there is nothing done to compensate families despite numerous promises by the government.
Homes were damaged, livelihoods and personal belongings destroyed and other than alternative accommodation, there has been nothing.
The bone of contention according to sources is that the company liable is prepared to build houses on condition the families waive their rights for litigation.

Both the Ministry of Mining and Water and Sanitation distanced themselves from any liability.
Last year President Ramaphosa promised residents that his government would help in any way.
“Government will help in every way possible to everyone who lost their homes, we will make sure your homes are built. Even if you lost your underwear we will make you have it back”

A year later they are still waiting.
Other than houses there is a risk of chemicals which could lead to cronic deseases.
