LESOTHO: Metsing’s cases dropped

Staff reporter
The Ladybrand Magistrate Court in South Africa dropped three cases levelled against the leader of the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) this week.

Mothejoa Metsing was charged by the Magistrate Court on three cases of tax evasion, money laundering and fraud. LCD deputy spokesperson Lesolle Phalatsi said his leader was picked up by the police in July while he was going to extend his visa to stay in South Africa where he was hiding.

Phalatsi said the court dropped the cases because they were baseless and only meant to drag the name of his leader in the mud.

“This also killed the spirit of the party,” he said, adding that his party did not have enough time to concentrate on the elections.

LCD only bagged three Proposed Representative (PR) seats after the 7th October elections.

After the elections, the LCD pronounced that it supports Sam Matekane government.
Phalatsi said there were some people in the government of Lesotho working with some officials in South Africa who wanted to ruin character of their leader and the party as well.

He said South Africa told them that the government of Lesotho does not have interest in the cases.

“We had always known that this was just witch hunt for Metsing,” he said.
Phalatsi said those in power had always wanted the head of his leader.

LCD spokesperson Apesi Rants’ele said they went to Ladybrand about three to four times but the case of Metsing never went on.

He said a police officer who was in charge of investigating the case of their leader in South Africa also never showed up.

“There were also no papers from the government of Lesotho indicating that there was a case against Metsing,” Rats’ele said.

He said they knew that the case was fabricated so that Metsing could be discredited by the people.
