Who wanted him dead at all costs?

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has remained tight-lipped following the death of a key witness in a R1.8 million fraud and corruption case involving the Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Teboho Mosuoane, the department’s Head of Legal Services, died on Sunday morning following a short illness.

Mosuoane had blown the whistle on fraud and corruption amounting to R1.8 million.

At the time of his death, the Hawks had already returned the investigation docket to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), where a decision on possible prosecution is still pending.

Sources close to the investigation revealed that large sums of money were withdrawn in cash, while company owners claimed to have no knowledge of how their businesses had been paid for work that was never carried out.

Another source further reported that some of the individuals implicated in the matter have since disappeared, with family members reportedly claiming not to know their whereabouts.

In December last year, former acting Head of Department for Public Works and Infrastructure also alleged survived a poisoning incident.

Dr Masego Tshabalala, Head of Department at Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation had also received death threats.

Captain Benjamin Calitz, the Hawks’ investigating officer, did not respond to questions sent by publication at the time of publishing.

While there is currently no evidence linking Mosuoane’s death directly to the corruption investigation, his passing has intensified public interest in the case, particularly as other employees within the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development have previously reported receiving death threats.

The big question is who had a motive to have Musuoane dead?

The investigation remains under the spotlight as the NPA considers its next course of action.

Next week we step into reasons why Nozie Molikoe was transferred to Social Development from Human Settlements, and replaced by Edward Kotjomela and how a company alleged used fraudulent papers to score tenders worth millions after paying a million.

Teboho Mosuoane will be buried tomorrow.

This is a developing story.
