Mangaung landfill collapse “self-created”?

Bloemfontein – The collapse at the Southern Landfill site in Mangaung Metro is increasingly being described as a crisis of the municipality’s own making.

This follows a media statement issued by the Bloemfontein based metro, the only metropolitan municipality in the Free State, addressing the deteriorating conditions at the site.

Instead of accountability, residents in the southern parts of Bloemfontein — particularly in the Vista area — have been instructed to dump waste at the Northern Landfill in Northridge. The decision has sparked fears of escalating illegal dumping, as many residents may find the alternative site too far or inaccessible.

STEPUPSANEWS has established that the service providers ceased operations at the Southern Landfill on 21 January 2026.

Insiders within Mangaung Metro state that the halt in operations may have been engineered to manufacture a crisis potentially paving the way for companies from outside the Free State to be brought in.

A tale of two pictures

Before Free State-based companies began operations, the site had dramatically deteriorated, prompting what is now being framed as a collapse.
