HARRISMITH – Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality has attributed its failure to pay employee salaries to an impasse between National Treasury and municipalities.
In an internal memorandum issued by Municipal Manager Adv. MM Mofokeng, the municipality informed employees that it is unable to process salary payments “at this stage” due to the ongoing impasse. The memo was addressed to all staff members, supervisors, managers and directors of both the municipality and Maluti-a-Phofung Water (SOC) Ltd.
The municipality said engagements with Treasury are continuing and promised to keep employees informed as soon as there are developments. It also apologised to staff for the inconvenience caused by the delayed payments.
The announcement leaves hundreds of municipal employees facing uncertainty as they await clarity on when their salaries will be paid. The municipality has not indicated when the impasse is expected to be resolved or when salary payments will be processed.
This happens weeks after 84 positions were advertised.
