BREAKING NEWS | MAP Power Struggle Erupts as Mayor Seeks Court Interdict, says Municipal Manager Behind Motion

Staff Reporter

Bloemfontein — A political storm is unfolding in Maluti a Phofung after Executive Mayor Malekula Melato approached the High Court on an urgent basis to interdict a looming motion of no confidence, while alleging that the Municipal Manager is behind the process.

In court papers, Melato argues that the motion was initiated through a procedurally flawed process, stating that she was not provided with sufficient information to respond to the allegations against her.

She contends that this undermined her right to fair process and meaningful participation.

The Mayor further indicated in her court papers that the Municipal Manager, Advocate Mzwakhe Mofokeng is behind the motion of no confidence, raising concerns about accountability within the administration.

According to the papers, Melato questions the role of officials in what is ordinarily a political process.

She also disputes claims attributed to the Municipal Manager that he “does not want to account,” maintaining instead that she had requested clarity and supporting documentation in order to properly respond, which she says was not provided.

The urgent application seeks to halt the motion from proceeding, pending the court’s determination on the lawfulness of the process. At this stage, the motion remains scheduled to proceed unless the court grants the interdict.

The Democratic Alliance have rejected the motion and will not be participating.

This is a developing story.
