LISTEN | From Findings to Filing Cabinet: PSC Report Buried, Officials Untouched

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – In 2023, Step Up SA News exposed the alleged irregular appointment of Cecil Ngwenya in the Free State Department of Education.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) investigated. It found the appointment irregular.

It recommended that the appointment be corrected.

Instead, the very same people implicated in the report took a legal advise and spent over R500 000.

That’s when Dr Henk Boshof was at the helm, when PSC did it’s job without fear, favor and prejudice.

Four years later, nothing has been done, four years later, the report appears to be gathering dust while the official remains in position.

The watchdog barked. But it did not bite.

Meanwhile, other controversial appointments continue in the government.

Valentine Sekhanke, appointed by COGTA under MEC Ketso “Toto” Makume and now as acting Chief Director of Corporate Services at DESTEA, he reportedly has a criminal record yet remains employed in government.

Jack Moeketsi Tlali, chairperson of the Free State Gambling, Tourism and Liquor Authority, has previously been convicted of fraud.

If accountability mechanisms are functioning, why do such cases persist?

Will MEC Maboya implement the PSC’s recommendation and set aside Cecil Ngwenya’s appointment?

Will MEC Makume review the appointment of Senkhane?

Will Premier Joyce Mathae address the status of Jack Tlali, appointed by her predecessor Mxolisi Dukwana?

Or will the PSC continue to produce reports that carry no consequence?

They say every day belongs to the thief, but one day belongs to the owner.

Lesedi FM’s Mantsheuwa Mofokeng interviewed Dr Maema Mongale.

Mongale said this erodes public trust.

The people of the Free State are waiting for that day.
