Bloemfontein – The provincial chairperson of the School Governing Body council (SGB), Konstable Selebedi, has dismissed calls for the removal of Free State MEC for Education, Dr Mamiki “Mathlabs” Maboya, following the release of the 2025 matric results.
The Free State achieved an 89.33% pass rate, finishing second nationally behind KwaZulu-Natal with 90.6% pass rate.
Speaking exclusively to this publication, Selebedi described calls for Maboya’s dismissal as the views of “lazy thinkers” who fail to appreciate the broader work being done within the education system.

He says if that lazy thinking would be followed then all other MECs from poor performing provinces would be axed.

Selebedi, whose board was elected in 2024, explained how the SGB provincial structure was formed and the role it plays in supporting schools across the province.

He further praised Maboya for prioritising quality over quantity, arguing that sustainable improvements in education require long-term investment rather than political pressure.

About matric results comparison Selebedi said due to inequality this is NOT fair.
WATCH
Selebedi condemned gangstarism in schools.
WATCH
He concluded by wishing the Class of 2026 well, from foundation phase through to Grade 12. He also encouraged teachers to remain committed and urged parents to play an active role in supporting learners.
