Bloemfontein – The timing could not have been more perfect for festive travellers as Jabu Mbalula, Member of Executive Council for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport opened upgraded R26.
The upgraded road connects Zastron, Sterkspriit and Smithfield.
According to the department, the project cost was R23 million and 420 jobs were created.
“The R26 road project, worth over R23 million, has created 420 jobs and empowered locals with valuable skills. The Smithfield, Mofulatshepe Welisizwe Rural Bridges, valued at R7 million, has created 50 jobs and connected the Smithsfield community to essential services like schools and health facilities.
For communities like Smithsfield, who were previously separated by a river, this bridge is a game-changer. It’s not just a structure; it’s a pathway to better education, healthcare, and a brighter future.”
The department has been in the news for all wrong reasons including purging and unlawful transfers of staff, disciplinary cases running over 813 days with employees on full pay while on suspensions and law suits due to potholes.
