Potholes filled with soil on R275 million project after protests from famers and taxi operators

Staff reporter

Ladybrand – The R708 betweeen Clocolan and Marquard remains deadly after we discovered potholes are filled with soil.

This followed a shut down by taxi operators and farmers in and around Ladybrand, Ficksburg, Clocolan, and Marquad last month.

Among their demands:

  • immediate payment to a contractor
  • payment and progress schedule
  • transfer of R708 to SANRAL
  • regular meetings with department officials and contractors

STEPUPSANEWS took a shot left to R708 and found potholes filled soil and no construction work on site.

With rainy season approaching, the worst will happen.

From Clocolan toward R26, about 500 meters of the road is completely gravel.

The R275 million contract was awarded to Maphuta Business Enterprise (MPE).

Chairperson of Manyatseng Taxi Association expressed his disappointed with the road.

“I am very disappointed with the way they are patching but not with soil.

I am hopefully they will create a make shift while fixing the road. Time is also not in their side as they were supposed to start on the 27 November 2024, they are eight months behind already.”

With regards to the damages he said.

We are forever repairing and replacing, rims, tyres and suspensions.”

The road maintenance tenders are lucrative and there are four or five companies who might be colluding. They get no less than 3 tenders a year and milk the department.
