Bloemfontein – Former ANC executive mayor of the Free State’s Setsoto local municipality — who resigned amid allegations of fraudulently obtaining South African citizenship — now works for department of Human Settlements in Free State.
Nthateng Maoke resigned in December 2019 with immediate effect as the mayor of the Ficksburg based municipality after the department of home affairs disputed her South African citizenship and insisted that she is a Lesotho national, which disqualified her from holding a public office in the country.
After her resignation, the minister of home affairs and [the] director general, sent their law-enforcement officers to deport her to Lesotho, but in the midst of that her legal representative took the matter to the high court for review.
Former Home Affairs, Regional Head, Bonakele Mayekiso, said that the former mayor was asked to leave the country.
“I also know, she was asked for her documentation and to leave the country. She is still around and the matter is in court. She says she is a South African citizen.”
STEPUPSANEWS can confirm Maoke is now working for Department of Human Settlements and her first day at work was 15 May 2025.
Maoke joins Sugar Ramakarane, her former municipal manager who works at COGTA as Head of Department.
It’s not clear if the position was advertised nor interviews were conducted or it’s one of those Public Service Commission will look into but they won’t, especially now.
Will Teboho “Sulky” Mokoena, MEC for COGTA and Human Settlements take this to court or pula ha ene?
Siya Gqoza, spokesperson for Home Affairs didn’t respond to our questions.
This is a developing story.
