Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The assassination of former Centlec CEO, Andries Mgoqi in a cold-blood murder has attracted a lot of attention to the ruling party after it emerged that he was promised a deployment at Mangaung Metro Municipality as City Manager.

Mgoqi was gunned down outside his tavern in Bergman Square by a lone hit man and at the time of his death he was embroiled in a labor matter with Centlec and the case was heading to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

WATCH:

A year after his contract expired Centlec initiated investigation into the R23 million contract he steered into between the power utility and Vodacom and other contracts.

In a letter, the board chairperson alleged the board didn’t approve.

The report found Mgoqi had signed the contract with Vodacom after his employment with Centlec expired when he was no longer an employee and certain SCM policies were breached.

This week we learned that he was promised a deployment as City Manager at Mangaung Metro a move Paseka Nompondo, former Provincial Secretary vehemently denied.

Nompondo sent his heartfelt condolences to the Mgoqi family.

“I convey my sincere condolences to the Mgoqi family during this trying and painful moment they are going through.”

Asked if ANC did promise him deployment Nompondo said no.

“The ANC has not promised the late comrade Mgoqi a deployment as the CM of MANGAUNG during the period I was leading as ANC PS for FS.

I knew him very well personally as a committed and skilled ANC technocrat.”

Nompondo said it was the Centlec board that dealt with contracts and they did not renew his contract despite being deployed by ANC.

“When his contract expired the Centlec board did not renew his contract but he finished it without any scandal and he performed outstandingly.

Yes, the ANC government deployed and employed him at Centlec, and he rose through the ranks until he became CEO.”

Asked about the Vodacom contract Nompondo said he knew nothing about it.

“I have no idea about VODACOM’s contract with Centlec.”

Mxolisi Siyonzana, former Executive Mayor of Mangaung Metro didn’t respond to our questions.

Siyonzana was the speaker and regional chair while Mgoqi was the CEO. He allegedly wanted Mgoqi to be the City Manager.

At this stage it’s not clear why the board wanted contracts Mgoqi signed investigated.

Who wanted Mgoqi dead or had the motive?

He will be buried on Saturday, 2 March 2024.

This is a developing story.
