Road Safety: Launch and companies awarded contracts

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – With the festive season already here all eyes were on the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, and judging from the Easter campaign, nothing much has changed.

According to publicly available information published on the day of the launch on Tuesday, 5 December 2023 at least:

  • 593 cars stopped
  • 17 Fines issued
  • 02 Mini Buses impounded
  • 05 trucks impounded
  • 16 undocumented foreigners

Three days later the numbers have not been updated despite the department deploying 511 traffic law officers and 30 from Road Traffic Management Cooperation across the province.

While there are no accidents or casualties reported thus far, the department is of the view that contributing factors are alcohol abuse by motorists and pedestrians.

With traffic volume expected to increase leading up to the long weekend, regular updates will be key.

In other news, the department has appointed Down Touch Investment PTY and Black Top Civils PTY contracts worth R232 million for 30 months and R65 million for 6 km of road maintenance respectively.
