BlanketGate: Free State Health splurge R5m on 10 000 needless blankets

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The Department of Health in the Free State Province is doing everything it can to out stage Digital Vibes, Eastern Cape Health Department, and Tembisa Hospital.

The digital vibes saga cost Dr. Zweli Mkhize his ministerial job, MEC, Sindisiwe Gomba, lost her job in Eastern Cape for procuring scooter ambulances while SIU flagged R850m fraud and corruption tender at Tembisa Hospital.

This after it emerged the department facing challenges in hospitals and clinics opted to prioritize blankets Free State hospitals, clinics, and ambulances didn’t need nor requested.

According to three independent sources in the clinical cluster which now has two DGGs that the department can not even explain and a mail from RG Radile, Chief Director: Budget Specialist in May 2023, asking clinics, hospitals, and EMS how many beds they have.

They were not even asked if they needs blankets.

Unbeknown to them the department was procuring blankets without them knowing.

Another source said some clinics and hospitals had just procured blankets.

“This came as a shock as some of us had just procured blankets and what are we going to say to Auditor General about these blankets in excess?”

In total the blankets procured are 10108 at R500 each.

Maybe just maybe, blankets are service delivery targets for the department.

A source from NEHAWU said the appointment of Dr. Sammy Mokoena as the second DDG for clinical services was always a red flag.

“When the MEC appointed Dr. Mokoena in the already occupied position and split jobs, we knew this was going to happen.

Go back in history and check Matjhabeng Local Municipality where she was Executive Mayor, she was arrested as you rightly reported in May and acquitted but that on its own is telling.

What was she arrested for?”

In conclusion, our source blamed ANC.

“The very same ANC resolved in 2012 here in Mangaung to appoint medical doctors as Ministers and MECs of Health because at least if they do all this nonsense you can report them to HPCSA, where are you going to report MaLeeto?”

Mondli Mvamvi, spokesperson for Free State Health did not respond to our questions.

We asked which company was awarded this tender and when was it advertised but they will surely respond to the Special Investigation Unit.
