Purging or Clean Up Police, Roads, and Roads?

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – Hardly a month since the appointment of MaQueen Mathae as the news MEC for Police, Roads and, Transport following the reshuffle by Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana, heads are rolling at the troubled department.

A leaked document inviting staff members up to level 12 to a meeting by Masego Tshabalala, acting HoD paints a picture of what to expect from the new MEC.

An extract from the invite reads.

“The purpose of the meeting is to provide you with the latest political and policy direction from the MEC.”

It is not clear what the political and policy direction means but one can not rule out the linkage between what a senior manager in the ANC shared with us that everyone with a link to Magashule is to be kicked out in certain positions, especially Supply Chain, Human Resources, and Finance.

While the new MEC is trying to settle in. Step UP News can confirm that Freddy Tokwe, Chief Director: of Roads and Infrastructure has resigned and is serving notice.

With Tokwe gone there are unconfirmed reports from internal sources that Teboho Ubane, Chief Director: Public Transport has been transferred to Social Development, with the following allegedly suspended:

Norman Selai, Chief Director: Corporate Services,
Shadrack Sekobile, Director: Human Resources,

Furthermore the following are allegedly facing suspension:

Ismail Muhammed: Head Fleet Management,
Pule Motsoetla, Director: Operations Road Building Equipment, and Fleet Management,
John Bofelo, Director, Supply Chain Management,
Jafta Mashudu Morobe, Chief Director: Planning, Performance, and Oversight

The staff at the department have mixed reactions to the latest developments with many thinking the department has an opportunity to clean out while others are saying the officials are targeted and purged.

Police, Roads, and Transport have been without a permanent HoD since Sipho Mtakati was suspended in 2021 over alleged failure to maintain provincial roads. Mtakati was replaced by Mosa Tladi who only acted until November 2021, she too was also replaced by Robinson Thekiso till the incumbent, Masego Tshabalala was appointed to ACT.

At the time Mtakati had accused Ntombela of improper conduct.

Mtakati remains the only HoD to have been suspended for alleged failure to perform his duties but we can confirm that few departments returned millions of unspent money to the National Treasury and its business as usual.

In other news, we have established some MECs force HoDs, Chief Directors, and Supply Chain Directors to appoint either staff or companies for certain tenders and you as accounting officers will go to jail not your political principals.

With the 2024 elections, on-site public servants must guard the purse otherwise they will end up in the dock like the former Human Settlement HOD who was sentenced to 15 years wholly suspended.

Hilary Mophethe, spokesperson for Police, Roads, and Transport did not respond to our questions including the highest qualification of MEC Mathae.
