Albert Nzula District Hospital partners with UFS and screen over 200 patients

Trompsburg – Albert Nzula District Hospital outside Bloemfontein continues to lead the provincial health in its batho pele principle, as they partnered with the University of Free State and OneSight for the blind.

Building on its success of October 2022 having recorded 119 orthopedic operations in 8 months the Xhariep-based hospital embarked on another journey after launching Eye Care Blitz on Wednesday 22, 2023 screening at least 215 patients and two receiving the spectacles and referrals for further medical checkups.

Step UP SA News has also learned that the department of health will also help and provide transport for patients who have appointments at the national hospital, those waiting for spectacles will be notified and those identified to have cataracts will have a date booked or the facility will be requested to get the date.

Under the leadership of Dr. Mosebi Thejane, the CEO, who joined the hospital in November 2017 the state-of-the-art hospital has in the past two years launched a successful orthopedic outreach program lifting the burden off Pelonomi Hospital and delivered the first caesarian babies and now launched the Eye Care Blitz sponsored by OneSight Essilor Luxottico Foundation.

A source from Pelonomi Hospital said Dr. Thejane helps a lot.

“He is always helping Pelonomi Hospital weekly with surgeries.”

Department of Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi, said they welcome partnerships.

“The Eye Care Blitz is a welcome intervention and we welcome the support of volunteers and sponsors.

They help the department to curb the high rates of rates eye care surgical backlogs and dealing with minor eye care ailments that need glasses and other preventative initiatives.”
