Maseru – Prime Minister Sam Matekane met opposition leaders in Parliament earlier today at ‘Manthabiseng Convention Centre. The meeting came barely a day after the SADC delegation which jetted to Lesotho on Wednesday left the country.
The delegation wanted to hear how the new government was going to push for the reforms that were not finalised by the previous government.
Prime Minister press attaché Thapelo Mabote said the premier wanted to hear from the leaders how they could push the reforms forward.
He said Matekane wanted to get input from the leaders on how they could finalise the work that was half done.
But no conclusion reached on how they are going to push this forward. Both the government and opposition are yet to agree how they are going to finalise the work.
The opposition leader who is also the leader of the Democratic Congress (DC) Mathibeli Mokhothu said they were happy for the meeting. He said the reforms are for the nation as a whole and not for the individuals. He said what should happen is that the law should be passed in Parliament.
“We should not start afresh; we have to take work where it was left,” Mokhothu said.
He said Basotho have been longing for the reforms to be finalised. So it is for them to see them done.
Mokhothu said they are going to work collaboratively with the government to see that reforms see alight of the day.
After leaving the country over the weekend, the SADC delegation had to go to South Africa to report to the SADC Facilitator to Lesotho’s political unrest Cyril Ramaphosa.
Matekane made a pledge in his inauguration speech that his government is going to push for the finalisation of the reforms.
He said reforms are important for the country.
