Cutting Edge News, Real Stories From South Africa

Free State Education HOD under fire over irregular appointments

The Free State Department of Education (DoE) is yet again under the spotlight, this as there are revelations that former PRASA engineer, Daniel Mthimkhulu was convicted for fraud following misrepresentation of qualifications which the state argued prejudiced PRASA millions.

In October we published an article heist in motion at Free State Education

following allegations of irregular appointments involving the leadership of the department and, in November which was a month later, we ran an expose of a convicted criminal running legal affairs at Free State Education

which prompted the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) to write to both HoD, Tsoarelo Malakoane and MEC, Tate Makgoe to respond to rebuke our articles which they have not.

Step Up SA News has it on good authority that in November the Portfolio Committee on Education invited both HoD and MEC to account to reported alleged irregular appointments with the latter not attending.

A source in the committee said Free State Education is always in bad publicity.

“We are indeed concerned that Free State Education is always in bad publicity and we still waiting for action plan from the HoD, it can’t be right that people just employ their friends and families with impunity. We were disappointed that MEC didn’t come.”

Another member of the comittee said Adv Malakoane can’t absolve himself from the irregular appointment.

“We asked HOD, Adv Malakoane as the accounting officer if indeed there is any truth that all these reported irregular appointments and he committed to instructing state law attorneys to investigate and act on recommendations. He can’t absolve himself saying it was not him or these happened prior to his tenure.”

Step Up SA News has also in the past reported changes within DoE with those alleged to be closer to the MEC Makgoe moved to Supply Chain following the appointment of Bob Tladi as acting DDG Corporate Servicers who is alleged to be the campaign manager as Makgoe campaigns for ANC chairmanship in the provincial conference and this was vehemently denied by the department.

In one incident an employee who is on paper at level 7 earns a salary of level 10.

Advocate Tsoarelo Malakoane, Head of Department, Free State Education had not responded to our questions at the time of publication.
