“Four board members received almost R360 000 each in December” – NEHAWU calls for disbandment of FSGLTA board

Staff Reporter

Bloemfontein – The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) in the Free State has intensified calls for the disbandment of the Free State Gambling Liquor and Tourism Authority (FSGLTA) board.

The union alleges that board members are using meetings as a source of income. According to NEHAWU, the board held 18 meetings in December alone, during which four members pocketed almost R360 000 each.

“In the last financial year alone, FSGLTA spent R3.5 million on board fees. Shockingly, in December 2025, four board members received almost R360 000 each,” NEHAWU said.

The union said this is in stark contrast to the failure to pay outstanding 2024/2025 salary increments to employees, despite a settlement agreement being in place.

“This selective payment is discriminatory and undermines the integrity of the entity,” NEHAWU added.

Chairperson under fire

NEHAWU said it is not surprised by the state of the entity, citing what it claims is a board that was not properly vetted.

The union alleged that the chairperson, Jack Tladi, is facing allegations of fraud yet continues to lead the entity, a situation it says undermines public trust and governance principles.

NEHAWU further accused Tladi of interfering in day-to-day operations, alleging he reports to the office daily and micromanages staff, including the acting CEO.

The union said this has created a toxic working environment and weakened the entity’s ability to function effectively.
