Bloemfontein – The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have remained silent on how attempted murder charges against Gregory Solomon Mosala Nthatisi, the Executive Mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, were withdrawn.
Police records indicate that the case was assigned to Captain Chaacha on 29 October 2013 at 15:37. The matter was later remanded by SS Kgukutli in the Free State High Court on 20 February 2014.
Court documents further show that the case file was closed several months later by T Pretorius on 19 November 2014, with the status recorded as (withdrawn).
Despite repeated enquiries, Mojalefa Senokotsoane, spokesperson for the NPA in the Free State and Northern Cape, and Colonel Covane, spokesperson for SAPS in Mangaung, have failed to respond to questions surrounding the withdrawal of the charges.
Among the unanswered questions are whether the firearm allegedly used in the incident was licensed and whether it was seized and subjected to ballistic testing as part of the investigation.
The silence from both SAPS and the NPA has raised concerns about transparency and accountability in a case involving a senior public office bearer.
NPA & SAPS PLAYING BLAME GAME
The National Prosecuting Authority and South African Police Service have been playing blame games over the past 18 months when it comes to political linked cases.
