Clocolan – The conditions on R708 between Marquard and Clocolan have moved from death traps (potholes) to gravesites (sinkholes) with a speed of a lightening.
Between our last tour in June and now at least one car got stuck in the sinkhole and things are getting worse.

MBE TERMINATED
The 24 months worth R274 million awarded to Maphutha Business Enterprise 12 months ago has just been terminated after taxi, business and farming community put pressure on Free State Provincial Government.

In June, the road was shut down with only emergency vehicles allowed to pass in protest of poor conditions of the road.
A memorandum was then handed to the representative of Community Safety, Roads, and Transport demanding:
– Termination of MBE
– Frequent meetings
– Road be transferred to SANRAL
Hardly 5 months later the contractor was terminated a new contractor to be appointed.
R708 and R709 remain important roads and they both are in horrible conditions.

With festive season up on us, if you can AVOID R708 and R709.
STEPUPSANEWS readers expressed their frustrations with the road:
