Is DPP in Free State really applying her mind?

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The testimony of Elain Thompson, Director of Public Prosecutions of Kwazulu Natal in the Madlanga Commission has shared some light on how prosecution arrive at deciding on whether to charge a person or not.

It took Thompson 5 months to decide following a raid at Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s house on the 6 December 2024.

Matlala was arrested on the 14 May 2025.

In Free State, Advocate Navilla Sobaru, DPP is still applying her mind on whether to charge Joyce “Pretenders” Mathae, Free State Premier.

The case was opened on the 11 October 2024, a month later (November 2024) the Hawks handed a docket to Sobaru to decide.

In July, NPA sent the docket back to the Hawks to tighten lose ends and since then, dead silence.

More evidence supporting Patrick “The Butcher” Phuti’s claims is coming forth, in the long text to Premier, Phuti said:

  • “Lawrence knows I have spent over R4.5 million as per your instruction from that project.”
  • ”I have all these recorded i am not just saying these.”

A WhatsApp text between Phuti and Mathae about the V class also confirms what he had claimed.

NATIONAL PROSECUTING AUTHORITY
Over the last 12 months or so the NPA in Free State has taken rather strange decisions.

Latest being a letter sent to Judge President Mosi requesting a magistrate from outside Free State, a view many deemed to suggest judges in Free State are compromised.

Another case that NPA fumbled us the extradition of Moroadi Cholota and rightly so, she won it.

The DPP in Gauteng will appear before a tribunal to determine his fitness to hold office after dropping charges against Zizi Kodwa.

SAPS
The police have also not come forth with why their official went to meet Mathae on the 11 October 2024, the same day EFF and DA opened a criminal case.

There is also a mystery as to why an inquest was not opened when Strike Putsoedi died at Mathae’s homestead.

In March this year, Mpho Kotsoane was arrested for demanding to see her father, William Kotsoane and spent a weekend behind bars.

As South Africans we must thank LG Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Advocate Thompson for confirming what we most of you suspected.
