MACUFE DRAMA: Tshabalala makes way for a possible looting

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – In a strange but not surprising turn on events, Steve Tshabalala, head of department at Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has taken special leave that will end just after Macufe.

Tshabalala whose delegated powers were withdrawn by Zanele Sifuba, MEC for SACR on the 1 August 2025, was accused of misconduct by his MEC and replaced by Kutlwano Tlhakudi till last Thursday when she was also replaced by Advocate Humphrey Malakoane.

Following the special leave of Tshabalala, Sifuba reinstated all delegated powers to Tlhakudi but due to her perceived conflict of interest she had to relinquish the acting position.

The department is yet to appoint service providers for the R18 million events project scheduled to start on the 3 September 2025.

Procurement at SACR is more often than not suspect and clouded with controversy.

To date, the documents related to the statues are still missing and no one has ever been held accountable.

The security at Winne Madikizela museum in Brandfort was at some point on month-to-month contract with personnel paid late.
