Free State Health: No honor, dead or alive

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The failure by department of Free State Health to commemorate the World AIDS in December two after months after department of Labor closed the state mortuary summed up the department in ruins.

World Aids Day is commemorated globally every year on the 1st of December. The Free State Department of Health failed to mark or commemorate this important day during 2024.

The purpose of the international world aids day is to raise awareness of the HIV pandemic. This has been happening since 1988

South Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV in Africa.

In 2023, South Africa and Nigeria were the countries with the highest number of AIDS related deaths worldwide. South Africa has the largest antiretoviral therapy program globally, with millions receiving ARV drugs.

This is a sign that all is not well in the department.

Insiders say the commemoration was billed for Xhariep but was cancelled with no reason provided.

The continued closure of the state mortuary will have undesirable consequences for post-mortem purposes as the department is now transporting bodies to Welkom.

A five day process now takes up to two weeks due capacity and transportation logistics.

The closed state mortuary could accommodate 100 bodies and to repair it, the estimate is around R18 million.

The department is failing citizens even when they are dead.
