Community Safety: Department on its knees and bleeding

Staff reporter

Welkom – The department of Community Safety, Roads, and Transport in Free State bleeding millions of rands in the latest AG report.

According to Auditor General of South Africa, the department recorded R1 127m(R1 billion) in the 2021/22 financial year in unauthorised/wasteful/fruitless expenditure.

This is after Sipho Mtakati, erstwhile HoD, was suspended in May 2021 and Robinson Thekiso acted till, Dr Masego Tshabalala was appointed to act.

The following year, the figures were half a billion, R505,7m and the HoD was Dr Masego Tshabalala acting till she was appointed permanently by Mxolisi Dukwana, former Premier in September 2023.

Administrative chaos with staff transferred without consultations and suspensions started after the chaotic conference held Imvelo Lodge.

Interestingly, the company with links to the owners of Imvelo Lodge got at least two tenders (R65 million for 6 km road repair and R127 million to pave 13 km road in Thaba Nchu).

Service delivery in the department is exactly what the ANC promised ahead of 94 elections, a better life for all.

Roadblocks are used as Public Relations exercise.

To show they don’t have shame, they even pose for photos with potholes shouting behind them.
