Welkom – The Department of Education in Free State (DoE) owe at least 49 teachers unpaid salaries dating back to 2023.
This is according to Dr Maki “Mathlabs” Maboya in response to a parliamentary question.
Democratic Alliance’s MPL, Leech asked Maboya how many employees have not been paid their salaries for 2023/24 and 2024/2025.
In response Maboya said.
“October 2023 – March 2023 = R4 301 412
April 2024 – September 2024 = R4 356 19.”
Leech also asked for reasons for the delay to which Maboya put the blame squarely on Department of Public Service and Administration.
“The delay relates to Department of Public Service and Administration’s circular 49 of 2023 which indicated the departments that are overspending on their budgets should not appoint new employees without consulting Provincial Treasury.”
It gets very interesting.
“The DoE struggled to implement this circular on time.”
The Department of Education is forever making elementary administration blunders.
In 2023, the department spent over R10 million on three events using RFQs selecting a cartel of businesses of people instead of open tender process.
It all started with the Mathlabs, which directly implicated the current MEC and AGSA found the tender to be irregular, it totalled over R650 million.
Followed up by the recruitment of Cycil Ngwengwa, a convicted criminal who is still in office despite the Public Service Commission (PSC) report issued in November 2023, that recommended the department corrects the irregular appointment of Ngwenya, that’s not all, the same report also recommended Bob Tladi who has been acting DDG for over 3 years be subjected to disciplinary process for appointing a candidate to a position she didn’t apply for.
Despite the damning report, Tladi is still acting as DDG and was never subjected to the hearing.
This is the same department teachers were captured in the video dancing on top of school tables smoking hubbly bubbly.
If you remove the matric results, Free State Education is as dysfunctional as Free State Municipalities.
In other news covid-19 employees whose contracts were not renewed and asked EFF in Free State to intervene, have now returned to work at Department of Health.
According to sources with intimate knowledge they started on the 2 January 2025.
