Bloemfontein – The Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport in Free State has been applauded for its road safety activities by motorists.

This follows a series of roadblocks across the province during the Easter Weekend.
Step Up team caught a wind of a roadblock on the N1 north just outside Bloemfontein targeting cars exiting the centre city in the crisscrossing returning from Eastern Cape and Western Cape respectively en route to Gauteng, North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga.
The queue was 3 km long and while many applauded the department, few were less impressed.
The main among those applauding the department is how the roadblocks are averting accidents due to fatigue, drinking under the influence, and unroadworthy cars.
At the same time, those who felt otherwise about the roadblocks say they are right on the national road and time-consuming.
There were no less than 8 traffic officers on duty and at the time of our arrival a motorist was served with traffic fine while a minibus was stopped towing a taxi.

In the festive season, the province dropped mortalities compared to the same period the previous year.
The department has not yet released its official stats on how many roadblocks were conducted, how many tickets were issued, illegal foreigners, cars impounded etc.
