Bophelo App, stillborn ahead of Easter Weekend

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The Department of Health (DoH) in the Free State is again in the spotlight just a few hours before Easter weekend.

With the provincial headquarters at the country’s center for travelers, accidents are bound to happen and mortalities are inevitable.

However, following the much-publicized launch of the ambulance request on an App called Bophelo App, on 22 November 2023, citizens have complained about how dysfunctional the App is.

WATCH:

Among their concerns, they said the poorest of the poor do not have the luxury of having smartphones and for those who can download the App, they do not get responses.

“We downloaded the App and requested an ambulance, got the reference and it has been over 12 hours of waiting, not even calling the two numbers provided.”

The text we received after downloading the App and requesting an Ambulance read.

“An incident has been reported to the FS Emergency Medical Services.Incident reference no. 20243/002653 has been created.”

If we had a patient in a critical state they would have died waiting.

What is also interesting is the contract between Vodacom and DoH was not an open tender where other service providers like MTN or Cell C had an opportunity to compete and is the contract for such service?

A story for another day.

The Department of Health has since taken a position of not responding to our questions, this is on record.
