Bloemfontein – The newly appointed Head of Department at Free State Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Steve Tshabalala got his hands dirty on the first day of a new job.
Appointed following a lengthy process, Tshabalala saved what could have turned out to be a diplomatic nightmare between South Africa and Singapore after staff at Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation got stuck in Singapore.
According to sources the Singapore/South Africa Focus Week was attended by MEC for Human Settlement abd COGTA, Toto Makume, MEC for DESTEA, Thabo Meeko and officials from Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.
SACR officials were allegedly accompanied by at least four exhibitors with accommodation, breakfast and lunch catered for, and former acting HoD Mokete Duma using his personal finances for dinner.
The SACR team together with exhibitors were stranded without return tickets and it took Steve Tshabalala to intervene in an effort to save the country from further embarrassment.
According to sources, Tshabalala instructed the team be booked flights though it’s not clear how they left South Africa in the first place.
In a department that has been without a permanent HoD since Stanley Malope was moved to Premier’s office, Tshabalala might be the catalyst the department needs.
Tshabalala is one of very few people within the ANC who publicly called former ANC Secretary General, Ace Magashule to order and told him what he thought of him, he also had an altercation with Saki Mokoena during the provincial conference.
In August Tshabalala who is also a member of the PEC decided to write an open letter to Provincial Secretary, Lihelele “50 000 Jobs For The Youth” Motsoeneng showing his support after Motsoeneng said “we are products of fraud”.
Steve Tshabalala, HoD for SACR could not be reached for a comment.
